What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is guided training for the muscles of the face, tongue, and mouth. We teach you (or your child) how to rest the tongue in the right place, seal the lips, breathe through the nose, and swallow comfortably. Small, daily practices build new muscle memory and healthier habits. It's gentle, non-invasive, and fits into real life.

Understanding Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)

OMDs are abnormal patterns of muscle function in the face, mouth, and throat that can affect breathing, swallowing, speaking, and facial development. These disorders often develop from habits like mouth breathing, thumb sucking, or tongue thrusting. Myofunctional therapy specifically addresses these disorders by retraining the muscles to function properly, improving overall oral health and function.

I'm Priyanka Neupane, BS, RDH, OMT—a clinical dental hygienist and orofacial myofunctional therapist. In practice, I met so many patients who were struggling with mouth breathing, snoring, jaw tension, or orthodontic relapse. Those visits inspired me to specialize in myofunctional therapy, a coaching-based approach that retrains tongue, lip, and breathing patterns with small daily habits.
